Petition for Return of Community Mural

Please sign and share this petition created by the young people of Gdansk, Poland who are campaigning for the return of their community mural:

BRING BACK OUR MURAL.

We are the young people of Gdańsk

In 2011 our local art centre Laznia invited British street artist Stik to Gdansk, Poland and asked him to paint a community mural with us. It is called ‘To Skomplikowane’ (‘It’s Complicated’). It was funded by local money and painted on shipping containers. This is the beginning of our story. In 2014 our work went missing from Gdańsk and bits of the mural were later found in Lamberty Gallery in London, some cut in place where Stik figures were holding hands. We were not consulted, neither was Stik or Laznia.

We don't want the work to be used by a stranger for commercial use or to be put up for sale. The artwork we made with Stik was about community and being together but it has been cut up. Now it's about splitting community to make money, a sad symbol of today’s world. We believe that our work can inspire many and give hope for people living where the mural was originally placed.

We are demanding for the mural to be sent back and we hope that you will do the right thing, Mr Lamberty.

If you want to support our project:

You can support our work by signing the petition and by sharing our story with your family and friends. Please help us to get our artwork back. We can't do this without your support.

Stik Street Artwork Raises £35,000 At Auction To Save Arts Centre

Stik (second from left) and the Magpie Collective at Phillips December 2016 ‘New Now’ Auction London with artwork, ‘Magpie’

12th December 2016, London/Bristol: A Stik street art piece has been sold at Phillips Auction in London for £35,000 to raise funds for the relocation of the Magpie Social Centre in Bristol. The piece was painted on the outside wall of the building back in 2009 on one of Stik’s trips to the city and was rediscovered shortly before the collective were evicted earlier this year. Stik only permits the sale of his street artworks when the money raised goes directly back to the community and he readily agreed to help them place the sale.

Lee Guy, one of the directors of the new Magpie Project Space enthused: “We’re grateful to Stik for authenticating this artwork and to Phillips auction for their generous support in the sale. The money raised will ensure that the Magpie will live on as a free arts space for our community for years to come.”

The collective who formerly squatted the vacant lot for 10 years are now browsing various properties in the Bristol area.

Stik Helps Rehouse Bristol Social Centre

Stik Authenticates Magpie Social Centre Mural:

Street Artist Stik has agreed to authenticate and approve the sale of a street art piece he once painted on the front of the Magpie Social Centre in Bristol. This piece appeared in 2009 on the front wall of the not-for-profit social centre which was evicted earlier this year and is currently looking for a new premises.

Stik states: “The Magpie Social Centre was one of the free spaces that actively encouraged street art and helped me to become the artist I am today. I don’t generally approve of the sale of street pieces but here I will make an exception. It gives me great pleasure to authenticate this piece so that Magpie can continue to support the next generation of artists.”

Stik only authenticates street artworks when all proceeds benefit the community they were painted for. The artist was approached by the community centre earlier this year and helped set up the sale with London auction house Phillips. The piece titled ‘Magpie’ has been preserved, framed and logged and comes with a certificate of authenticity. This fundraising system has been set up to counteract the removal and unauthenticated trade in street artworks.

The log of all authenticated street artworks can be found at www.stik.org/fundraising

A bespoke banner created by artist Stik, was paraded with tens of tens of thousands of people at the Pride in London March on Saturday. The two metre high artwork depicts two androgynous figures holding hands on a rainbow background and completed the all-day rally on top a specially adapted Hackney Carriage Taxi.

The banner was commissioned by Hackney council and was hand-stitched in heavy body flag cotton in collaboration with Flagmakers Ltd. the oldest flag makers in Britain who also make flags for The Queen (of England!). The piece will be put into a London auction later this year to raise funds for a Hackney-Based LGBTQ+ charity or organisation to be chosen by the community. Until then the banner will be on display for free at Hackney Museum.

The parade was joined by Stik and friends from the LGBTQ+ community and queer underground movement and a large crowd of Hackney residents carrying their home-made Stik placards

The first collected volume of work from feted street artist Stik, fully illustrated and beautifully presented

“Social change IS what art does. I don’t know what else there is, to be honest. Social change seems to me the primary function of art. I feel that’s my duty. That’s why I’m here. That’s what art is supposed to do.” –STIK

Stik first came to notoriety as an underground street artist who painted life-size stick figures during the night around London’s East End. As a firm believer in the right to protest, the freedom of speech, and basic human rights, Stik has now painted murals in cities, towns, and villages all over the world, focusing his work in communities that face repression and disenfranchisement.

Having gained an international following, Stik credits his audience with the intelligence to fill in the emotional details of his work, which always consists of just six lines and two dots. Each piece is a meditation.

This is the first collected volume of his work to date. It reveals the political and artistic inspiration behind the work of one of the street art community’s most brilliant and inspiring artists.

The first edition includes an exclusive limited edition lithographic print inside the book, in either blue or orange.

Stik NHS prints raise £32,500 at Christie’s auction.

A set of prints by British street artist Stik titled ‘Sleeping Baby’ have sold at Christie’s auction in London for £32,500 in aid of Homerton Hospital Charitable Trust.  The ‘Sleeping Baby’ image which represents the vulnerability of the NHS has been adopted as a mascot by the Junior doctor’s industrial strike action and Stik, a keen advocate of a free and public health service has produced bespoke banners and rallied in solidarity with them since October last year.

“The NHS is our baby and we need to look after it’ says Stik, ‘Homerton is my local hospital and it has looked after me for many years, now it is my turn to show my support to those who work there”

This is the second fundraiser Stik has made bringing the total funds generated for his local hospital to £82,500 in just under a year.

The winning bidder Keiran-James Brown who says he sold a well-known portrait of the queen to make space for the ‘Sleeping Baby’ prints, said this about the image “Having been affected by my own battle with mental health over the years my life wouldn't be on track today without the great support I've had from the NHS. These images reflect, for me, the fragility of life itself”

Street Artist Stik NHS fundraiser at Christie’s Auction

British street artist STIK’s iconic ‘Sleeping Baby’ print proofs will go on auction today at Christie’s South Kensington, London. The edition last year raised £50,000 for Homerton Hospital in London and this week the full set of four artists proofs will give an extra boost to the hospital with 100% of funds going to their charitable trust.

The ‘Sleeping Baby’ image represents the vulnerability of the NHS and has been adopted by the junior Doctor’s as the mascot of their industrial strike action. This is a unique opportunity to own a piece of social history in the making.

Stik has restarted negotiations for the return of ‘Solidarność’ (Solidarity), a community mural commissioned by Laznia Centre for Contemporary Art and painted by Stik in collaboration with the young people of Gdansk in 2011. The mural was removed without the permission of Stik or Laznia and reappeared, cut into pieces and offered for private sale in a West London Gallery in 2015.

Gdansk Community Mural Update | November 2015

Stik is supporting Laznia Centre for Contemporary Art and the local community in the recovery of the missing 2011 Gdansk community mural which has re-emerged recently in a West London Gallery. A dialogue has been established. Stik will be presenting an overview of the situation to students and members of the Institute of Art and Law on the 28th Nov 2015.
The Polish Authorities are also investigating the case.

Negotiating Return Children’s Community Mural

The 2011 Children’s Community Mural in Gdansk, Poland was commissioned by Laznia Centre for Contemporary Art and financed by The British Council and Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of Poland and the City of Gdansk as part of the Brit-Cult Festival and was contracted for educational purposes only and not for commercial exploitation. The mural was painted by Stik in collaboration with children from the local area. In 2014 the mural was removed from its original location by a third party without the knowledge of Stik or Laznia and is now in the hands of a fourth party. Stik and Laznia are attempting to negotiate with the fourth party for the return of the mural to its original location. The Polish Authorities have been informed of the situation and are in the early stages of an investigation.
