To celebrate the 12 year anniversary of STIK’s East Village ‘Liberty’ mural in New York, STIK and Christopher Pusey of Dorian Grey Gallery present a showcase of the preparatory, working artworks for the iconic mural. Two original preparatory canvases are on display, one exhibited at ‘Seeing Red’ Nassau County Museum and other and the other at stall #511 Art Miami. A Liberty limited edition screen print is also available.
The 2012 Liberty mural overlooks Tompkins Square the home of civil rights uprisings since the 1800s. Hand panted banners were paraded round Tompkins Square as a ‘happening’ and certain artworks were sold at Dorian Grey Gallery in aid of political prisoners. The opening ceremony of ‘Liberty’ was officiated by celebrated New York writer, cartoonist and escapee of Vichy internment camp, Anthony Haden-Guest.
The Liberty mural is a symbol of resistance, and these preparatory works are an important part of its legacy.
‘Liberty’ is part of a series of political New York murals including ‘Union’ on Union Square, to mark the route of the first Labour Day parade and ‘Migrant’, formerly on The Tenement Museum, Avenue of the Immigrants.
